OK, so I totally re-wrote my website. I finally have the ability to blog. I've wanted this for a long time because I think a lot of people with tax problems will get some benefit from my many years of experience in solving tax problems. The question now is, what do I write about in my very first blog?
Let me start by giving a little history of how I came to specialize in this type of tax practice. I used to have a regular traditional CPA firm with the bookkeeping, payroll, financial statements and tax areas. Every once in a while I would have a client that was in trouble with the IRS and I would help them fix the problem. I hated it! The IRS scared me too because I didn't know all the rules and regulations the IRS was required to follow and they tended to bully me around just like they did the client. It always seemed to take twice as long as it should have to get anything done. I didn't feel good about billing for my time because I was so inefficient at it - I gave away most of those hours.
Then, in 1997, I found an organization made up of Attorneys, CPAs and EAs that was just forming and I joined. It was a group that met regularly on a national basis to discuss Tax Problem Resolution services and I loved it. I learned how to get problems resolved quickly and efficiently and I learned the rules and regs that IRS employees have to follow. And I learned how to bill the services so that I could actually make a living at it! For the next 10 or so years, I became so busy at solving problems that I was able to let go of the non-tax part of my practce and devote full time to taxes: my regular tax practice during "tax season" and Tax Resolution Services during the remainder of the year.
Of course now one can't watch TV or listen to the radio without hearing an ad for "Pennies on the Dollar" ads by certain companies. Out of curiosity, I've called a number of these ads posing as a person with problems and listened to the slick salesmen promise to solve all my problems for a (pretty big) fee. All I had to do was give over my credit card information! Unfortunately over the years I've had many people in my office who did give these places their money only to be grossly disappointed.
As awful as it may sound, the people I meet with that have been ripped off by the national firms are the easiest for me to sign up. They know where my office is (we always meet here), they know exactly what I am doing for them, and they know exactly what the fees are. They no longer have to call people they don't know and repeat their situation over and over. I handle all aspects of every case myself! I'm not looking for a huge number of tax problem clients to pay my advertising and overhead costs - I just take care of people in San Diego who need help dealing with the IRS or state.
Thank you for reading my very first blog! I hope to be a regular contributor, so please check back often and, if you have a problem I can help with, give me a call, email or drop in.
